Hearth — Terms of Use

Last updated: 11 October 2026

These terms apply when you use Hearth, the free 5e-compatible tabletop RPG companion, on hearthdnd.org or in the Android app. Hearth is made and run by Thomas Dalton, based in the United Kingdom ("Hearth", "we", "us"). Contact: hearthdnd@gmail.com. By using Hearth you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use it.

1. What Hearth is

Hearth is free hobby software for keeping track of characters and running games at your table. It is provided as it is, it is still being developed, and features may change or be removed. We do not charge for Hearth, and there are no in-app purchases or ads.

2. Unofficial fan content

Hearth is unofficial, fan-made software. It is not affiliated with, endorsed or sponsored by Wizards of the Coast. Dungeons & Dragons and D&D are trademarks of Wizards of the Coast LLC. Rules material from the System Reference Documents 5.1 and 5.2 is used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence; the full attribution is on the legal notices page.

3. Your content

Your characters, campaigns, notes, maps and homebrew belong to you. They stay on your device unless you use an optional feature that sends them somewhere (see the privacy policy). Please keep backups: if you clear your browser data or uninstall the app, your data on that device is lost.

Only add content you have the right to use. Don't import, upload or share material that infringes someone else's copyright or trade marks (for example, text copied from published rulebooks you don't have permission to copy), or that is unlawful, abusive or harmful.

4. Community Content Library

Items in the Community Content Library are made and shared by their authors under the licence shown on each item (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 or the Open Game License 1.0a). If you submit content to the library, you confirm that it is your own work or that you have permission to share it under that licence, and you agree to the rules in the library's contributing guide. We review submissions before they appear and may remove any item at any time.

5. Live games and invites

Use the live game link and email invites only with people you play with. Be kind: don't use names, notes or invites to harass anyone. The DM controls who joins a game and can remove anyone.

6. Acceptable use

Don't misuse Hearth: don't try to break, overload or get unauthorised access to its services (including the Firebase back end), don't use it to break the law, and don't use it in a way that harms other people.

We respect intellectual property. If you believe something in Hearth, on hearthdnd.org or in the Community Content Library infringes your copyright, trade mark or other rights, email hearthdnd@gmail.com with the subject "Copyright or takedown request" and include:

We aim to acknowledge requests within 5 working days and will remove or disable material that we find, or reasonably believe, infringes. If your community item was removed and you think that was a mistake, email us and explain why. Material hosted on GitHub can also be reported to GitHub under its own DMCA policy.

8. No warranty

Hearth is provided free and "as is". We try to make it accurate and reliable, but we don't promise that it will always be available, error-free or that its rules calculations are correct. You remain responsible for your rulings at the table and for keeping backups of your data.

9. Our liability

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded under the law of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, you also have legal rights that these terms do not affect. Subject to that, because Hearth is free, we are not liable for any loss of data, loss of profit or indirect loss arising from your use of Hearth.

10. Changes and ending

We may update these terms; the new version will be posted here with a new date. You can stop using Hearth at any time and delete your cloud data from the app (see the privacy policy). We may suspend or end access to the optional online features if they are misused.

11. Law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the UK or in the EU, you can also rely on the mandatory consumer protections of where you live, and bring proceedings in your local courts.
